People are Happy with Professional Remote Interpretation: Study Reveals

Language interpretation is continuing to grow and with improvements in technology it has become easier than ever to offer over-the-phone (OPI) and video remote interpretation (VRI) to satisfy the rural demand where Spanish or Sign Language interpreters may be scarce, or those who simply want immediate access to an interpreter.

survey presented in 2018 and paid for by the European Commission found that half of the participants had experience with professional interpreters while a quarter of respondents reported never using an interpreter for their business.

The same study found that clients would like to choose interpreters based on their linguistic background and strengths in particular sectors. Respondents also valued native speakers and those with professional interpreting experience, certifications, and references. Interpreter consistency for meetings was also valued highly as well as how quickly they were to respond.

Over 75% of participants responded that they had no issues using a professional interpreter in the past. Some problems reported had to do with the price of an interpreter, specific linguistic knowledge, lack of available interpreters and punctuality.

Most people would also recommend either an OPI or VRI interpreter, showing that they had had good experiences in the past. Only 11.3% had reported negative experiences with such services. VRI services are more heavily preferred over OPI interpreting. People considered it valuable to see the person they were talking to.

Social and medical industries show the strongest demand for either OPI or VRI services with less of a demand coming from the business and conference/training areas.
