National Association of the Deaf Applauds Ruling Regarding Interpreters

A judge has required the White House to use American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters during Covid briefings.

The decision will help those who are deaf or hard of hearing “make better decisions on how to stay safe from the pandemic,” said National Association of the Deaf CEO Howard A. Rosenblum.

There is no reason why such critical information should be inaccessible to millions of Americans. This ruling ensures that the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) will be followed and that via ASL interpreters, the Deaf community will stay up to date on the latest developments in our fight against one of the most robust diseases to hit humankind in the last 100 years.

The sad part however, is that a judge had to rule in favor of such a clearly humanitarian effort at inclusion. It’s not surprising given several well known examples of Trump mocking and discriminating against people covered under the ADA. His callousness against those who struggle to lead independent lives is outrageous, and hopefully come November Biden will take over and make their lives easier as he fights for equality and not against it.
