“CHARLOTTE, NC – It turns out that Santa Claus can speak in any language.
On Tuesday at Northlake Mall, 70 deaf and hard-of-hearing children from the Charlotte region got to tell Santa everything on their lists.
Popular items this year include bicycles, dolls, and video game systems. However, being able to talk to Santa Claus in their own way makes it all the better.
“It will be a memory they’ll always remember for the rest of their lives,” said Donna Katic with Deaf Services.

“Yes it is, and to be able to have Santa sign to the children is just a wonderful experience, and to see adults who are deaf and hard-of-hearing using sign language here at the event and having crafts and other activities in their primary language is wonderful,” said Joanna Chantemerle, a volunteer at Tuesday’s event.
Each child also enjoyed a pizza party with cake. A magician, balloon twister, and jugglers also got in on the merry fun. Participating children were selected through the Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
Organizers said they are already planning next year’s event.
